Wednesday, September 29th
Written By: Hannah Walters, Ignite Institute Intern for Stinger Media, LLC
ParentCamp, a national non-profit, is pleased to announce that a ParentCampNKY – College and Career Edition will be held on Wednesday, September 29th, 2021 for the Northern Kentucky region. Through the collaboration of regional partners, this free event is being presented by GROW NKY (Growing Regional Outcomes Through Workforce) and will take place via Zoom from 7:30-9:15 pm. This event is for middle school and high school families and educators as well as professionals. ParentCamp is honored to work with GROW NKY to help guide local youth through the overwhelming, confusing jungle of career and college exploration can be- and knowing which pathway to take is the first step.
GROW NKY is a strategic workforce collective composed of leaders across key industries, educational institutions and community organizations working collaboratively to leverage the region’s assets to grow, attract and retain a globally competitive workforce. GROW NKY focuses on five key areas of workforce development, following a cradle-to career model.
“As the backbone organization of GROW NKY, the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce is committed to connecting our community with college and career readiness programs that will prepare our workforce for the future,” said Brent Cooper (@bcoopernky), NKY Chamber (@NKYChamber) President and CEO. “We encourage parents to attend this ParentCampNKY event to learn more about the tools and resources available to make sure their child is set up to succeed on their journey to a career.”
“What makes a ParentCamp so different than traditional family-school-community engagement events is that there are no presentations, each room will have a facilitator of dialogue and help to harness all the expertise and experiences that is in the room” states ParentCamp (@ParentCamp) President Julia Pile (@juliepile), a Boone County resident who heads up the non-profit. “Everyone has knowledge to share about their experiences and sharing that knowledge makes an individual feel valued which is one of our basic core human needs. It is amazing how quickly people feel connected to each other during a ParentCamp.”
There will be at least 23 different rooms for participants to choose from and each room will be repeated twice. One of the basic conditions of a ParentCamp is the freedom of location, meaning participants can move from room to room as they wish. With so many rooms being offered, an individual could visit 2, 4, 6 or even more rooms during the night. It is all about the attendee being a learner and being in charge of their learning.
The flow for the evening will be:

“There are numerous opportunities available to students in high school to help students begin thinking and working towards what comes next. I believe that this event will help shine a light on a number of these opportunities and help parents and their students have the freedom to ask questions and learn more about how students can take advantage of these opportunities,” Mr. James Catchen (@CatchenJames), Assistant Director of School Based Scholars (@nkusbs) , Northern Kentucky University (@nkuedu) said, “Even if a student is already in high school, it is never too late (or too early) to start thinking about the topics presented at this event and get actively involved. Creating awareness about the vast options available for kids is imperative. “
“Parent Camp is an opportunity for parents/caregivers to hold dialogues with local experts on topics ranging from paying for college to the most promising careers in our region,” the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Gateway Community and Technical College (@GCTC_News), Dr. Teri Vonhandorf, said. GCTC is passionate about helping children and families “navigate the college selection and enrollment process.”
ParentCamp is proud to partner with many organizations of the GROW NKY workforce collective for this event, including the following: Northern Kentucky Cooperative for Educational Services (@NKCESKids1st), Gateway Community and Technical College (@GCTC_News), Northern Kentucky University (@nkuedu), NKY Chamber of Commerce (@nkychamber), Gear Up Kentucky (@GearUpToday), Northern Kentucky Education Council (@NKYEC1), Kentucky Collaborative for Families and Schools (@prichardcom), Boone County Schools (@Boone_County) and Thomas Moore University (@ThomasMoreKY). “The planning team for this huge regional event has been incredible to work with, the resources and people in the region which we have access to are unmatched, The number of organizations represented by the diverse number of facilitators is incredible” states Julia Pile. “This has truly been a labor of love and a gift to our community.”
